Canada’s Most Accurate Snow Day Predictor

Every winter, millions of Canadian parents and students face the same stressful question the night before a storm: will school be cancelled tomorrow? Until now, the answer meant staring at weather apps built for American cities, refreshing school board websites at 5 AM, and second-guessing weather forecasts that were never designed to tell you what your school board will actually decide.

Snowpredictor.ca was built to fix this. Our snow day predictor analyses live Environment Canada weather data, applies it to your specific school board’s historical closure thresholds, and gives you a clear, easy-to-understand probability score — hours before your board makes the call. We cover every Canadian province and over 50 individual school boards. It is completely free and always will be.

How to Use the Snow Day Predictor

In just a few steps, you can calculate your local snow day chance for tomorrow.

Enter Your City

Type your city name or tap “Use My Location.” Covers every major Canadian city from Victoria, BC to St. John’s, NL.

 We Analyse the Weather

Our algorithm pulls the latest Environment Canada forecast and analyses five key factors: snowfall, wind chill, wind speed, snow depth, and storm timing.

Read Your Snow Day Probability

You receive a probability score between 0% and 98% — colour-coded Green, Blue, Orange, or Red — so you know exactly how likely a closure is.

Get Your Answer in Seconds

Enter your city, tap the button, and your snow day probability appears instantly. No account, no email, no waiting — just a clear result when you need it most.

Why Snowpredictor.ca Is Different

Our predictions aren’t random. They’re based on a rules-driven model designed around how Canadian winter storms typically impact school operations.

Built for Canadian Schools — Not an American Tool

The most popular snow day prediction tools were built for American schools. Their algorithms are calibrated for US school districts, US weather thresholds, and US bus safety standards. When a Canadian parent uses those tools, they are getting a prediction designed for Philadelphia or Detroit — not Toronto or Barrie. snowpredictor.ca was built from the ground up for Canada, using Canadian school board data, Canadian weather models, and Canadian closure patterns.

Live Environment Canada Data

We use weather data from Environment Canada’s Meteorological Service — the official Canadian weather authority and the same data source your school board uses when making its closure decision. Our data updates every hour during active weather events, so your prediction is always current.

School Board Calibrated

A 10 cm snowfall means something very different to the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) in Barrie — where Georgian Bay lake-effect events are a regular occurrence — compared to the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), where 10 cm is a significant event but urban infrastructure keeps roads passable. Our predictions reflect each board’s specific history and thresholds, not a one-size-fits-all national algorithm.

Always Free

No account. No email address. No subscription. snowpredictor.ca will always be free for Canadian parents and students. Enter your city and get your answer.

Snow Day Predictions by Province

Select your province for a prediction tailored to local school board data and regional weather thresholds. Each province page lists every major school board, when and how they announce closures, and links to the largest cities in the province.

Who Uses Snow Day Predictor?

Snow days affect more than just students. snowpredictor.ca is designed to support everyone who needs to plan around Canadian winter weather — hours before your school board makes the call.

For Parents and Guardians

Plan Your Day with Confidence

Use the prediction the evening before to decide whether to arrange childcare, adjust your work-from-home schedule, or prepare for an early morning drive on difficult roads. When the predictor shows 75% or higher, it is worth having a backup plan ready before you go to sleep.

For Students

Know if You Can Sleep In

Check the forecasted snow day probability before you decide whether to finish that assignment tonight or set a backup alarm for 6 AM. A high percentage does not guarantee a day off — but it gives you the best available read on what your school board is likely to decide.

For Teachers and School Staff

Prepare Before the Announcement

A high predicted probability the night before is a useful signal to prepare flexible lesson plans, online materials, or alternate activities in case a closure or bus cancellation is announced. snowpredictor.ca gives you the same advance warning your students are checking — so you are never caught off guard.

When Do Canadian Schools Announce Snow Days?

Canadian school boards typically make their closure decision between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM on the morning of a potential storm. Road condition assessors are deployed from 3:30 AM onwards, driving primary bus routes and reporting back to administrators by 5:30 AM. The final decision is then communicated to families by 6:00–6:30 AM through the board’s website, automated notification systems (SchoolMessenger), and local radio stations.

For overnight storms, many boards issue an advance “Storm Watch” notice as early as 10:00 PM the night before. Our predictor is most accurate when checked at two key times: 9:00 PM the night before for a preliminary read, and 5:00 AM on the morning of the storm for the most current assessment before your board announces.

Key Features of Snow Day Predictor

snowpredictor.ca was built to be fast, accurate, and completely private. Here is what makes it different from a standard weather app.

Live Environment Canada Data

We pull forecast data directly from Environment Canada’s Meteorological Service — the same official source your school board uses when making its closure decision. Our data updates every hour during active weather events, so your prediction always reflects the latest conditions, not yesterday’s forecast.

Canada-Wide Coverage

From Victoria, BC to St. John’s, NL, snowpredictor.ca covers every major Canadian city and all 10 provinces. Type any city name or postal code and receive a prediction calibrated to your specific region and school board — not a generic national estimate.

School Board Calibrated Predictions

A 10 cm snowfall triggers very different responses depending on where you live. Our model accounts for each school board’s historical closure thresholds, so a prediction for Barrie reflects Georgian Bay lake-effect patterns, while a prediction for Toronto reflects urban road conditions and TDSB closure history.

Fast, Simple Interface

The tool is designed to load quickly and work smoothly on phones, tablets, and desktops. Enter your city, tap the button, and your result appears within seconds — no account required, no loading screens, no clutter.

Clear Visual Probability Gauge

Your result is displayed as a bold percentage with a colour-coded gauge — green, blue, orange, or red — so you can understand the prediction at a glance, even when you are half-asleep checking your phone at 11 PM before a storm.

Completely Free and Private

No account. No email address. No subscription. We do not store your location or share your data with third parties. Your postal code or city name is used only to identify your region — nothing more. snowpredictor.ca will always be free for Canadian families, students, and educators.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the snow day predictor?

Our predictor achieves approximately 85–90% accuracy for major snow events (15 cm or more) and 70–75% accuracy for marginal events (5–10 cm). Accuracy is highest when you check at 5 AM on the morning of a storm, after the overnight forecast has updated. See our how it works page for a full breakdown of accuracy by event type.

Does the snow day predictor work for all provinces?

Yes — all 10 Canadian provinces are covered. Ontario and Quebec have the most detailed board-level calibration. All other provinces are covered using regional weather data and publicly available board history. See individual province pages for the boards we specifically cover.

How is this different from AccuWeather?

AccuWeather gives you a weather forecast. snowpredictor.ca interprets that forecast through a school closure algorithm calibrated specifically for Canadian school boards. AccuWeather tells you 20 cm is coming — snowpredictor.ca tells you there is a 78% chance school will be cancelled in Barrie because of it. Both tools serve different purposes. snow day predictor vs accuweather.

Does it work for private schools?

Our algorithm is calibrated for public school boards. Private schools make independent decisions that can differ significantly from public board decisions even under identical weather conditions. Treat our score as a general winter severity indicator for private school closures.

How far in advance can I check?

Predictions are most reliable for the next 24 hours. We display data up to 48 hours ahead but accuracy drops as the forecast window extends. Always recheck at 5 AM on the morning of a storm for the most current assessment

Is there a mobile app?

snowpredictor.ca is fully mobile-optimised — no app download required. On iPhone: tap the Share button → Add to Home Screen. On Android: tap the three-dot menu → Add to Home Screen. This creates a home screen icon for one-tap access, just like a native app.
