Ontario Snow Day Predictor — All 72 Boards Covered
Ontario is Canada’s most populous province and home to the largest concentration of school boards in the country. With over 4.5 million students enrolled in 72 district school boards, Ontario also has the greatest regional variation in how boards respond to winter weather. A 12 cm overnight snowfall might close schools across all of Northern Ontario while the TDSB in downtown Toronto stays open.
snowpredictor.ca’s Ontario snow day predictor is calibrated for each Ontario board individually — reflecting the specific snowfall thresholds, wind chill tolerance, and transportation infrastructure of each region. Enter your Ontario city above to get your board-specific probability score.

Ontario Snow Day Frequency by Region
Snow day rates in Ontario vary dramatically by geography:
- GTA and Southern Ontario: 2–5 per year — lowest in Ontario, urban infrastructure advantage
- Eastern Ontario (Ottawa, Kingston): 5–8 per year — Ottawa Valley storm track delivers regular significant events
- Central Ontario (Barrie, Simcoe County): 6–10 per year — Georgian Bay lake-effect snow is the primary driver
- Western Ontario (London, Hamilton): 3–6 per year — Lake Erie and Huron lake-effect events
- Northern Ontario (Sudbury, Thunder Bay): 8–12 per year — heavy snowfall, rural roads, longer bus routes
When Does Ontario Announce Snow Day Decisions?
Most Ontario school boards follow a consistent early-morning process. Transportation supervisors begin driving bus routes at approximately 3:30–4:00 AM. Road condition reports are submitted to board administrators by 5:00–5:30 AM. The Director of Education makes the closure decision by 5:30 AM, and families are notified by 6:00–6:30 AM through the board website, SchoolMessenger automated notifications, local radio, and the board’s Twitter/X account.
For overnight storms, many Ontario boards issue advance notice by 10:00–11:00 PM. Monitor your board’s website and social media from 9 PM onwards during storm events.

Frequently Asked Questions — Ontario Snow Days
What is the difference between a snow day and a bus cancellation in Ontario?
A bus cancellation means school buses are suspended but schools remain open. Students who can travel independently are expected to attend; bus-riding students are excused. A snow day means the school itself is closed. Our predictor is calibrated for full school closures only.
Do Catholic and public boards always close on the same days?
Usually but not always. Catholic and public boards sharing the same geography typically coordinate closure decisions, but they make independent calls. Cases where one board closes and the other remains open do occur, particularly in GTA areas where TCDSB and TDSB serve overlapping geography.
How many snow days are Ontario students allowed before make-up days are required?
Ontario boards must provide 194 instructional days per year. Most build 2–4 buffer days into their calendar specifically to absorb snow days without requiring make-up time. If closures exceed the buffer, PA days can be converted to instructional days or the school year can be extended into late June.
