Thunder Bay Snow Day Predictor
Canada's most accurate snow day predictor
Will Thunder Bay Schools Be Closed Tomorrow?
Thunder Bay is Northwestern Ontario’s largest city and experiences severe winter conditions from two directions: heavy snowfall (approximately 200–240 cm/year) driven by Lake Superior lake-effect from the west, and extreme Arctic cold snaps from the north that can push wind chill to -40°C to -50°C. The Lakehead District School Board serves a large geographic area across Thunder Bay and surrounding communities, with extensive rural bus routes through exposed terrain.

Thunder Bay Snow Day History
Lakehead DSB averages approximately 8–12 closure days per year. Both snowfall events and extreme cold events contribute to Thunder Bay’s elevated closure rate. Lake Superior lake-effect can deliver heavy snow rapidly along the north shore. Arctic outbreaks from the northwest can bring -40°C or colder wind chill that makes outdoor waiting at bus stops genuinely dangerous.

Yes — when wind chill reaches -40°C or colder, the Lakehead DSB activates extreme cold protocols that can include school closure. Students waiting at outdoor bus stops in -45°C or -50°C apparent temperature face genuine frostbite risk within minutes.
